A look back at the fashion trends of 2009 and the celebrities who influenced the industry (2024)

The year 2009 was one of sleek, daring and quite frankly, tough fashion. Never before have leathers been so prominent, darks so universal and studs so frequently used.

Pop culture had more influence than ever on the fashion world, with entertainment icons like Lady GaGa and Rihanna making leotards and pantyhose as normal as distressed jeans.

A slew of period-piece movies like "Public Enemies" and "Inglourious Basterds," paired with the continuing rise of celebs like Dita Von Teese also caused the resurgence of attire last seen just under a century ago.

As a way to commemorate the last year, I've compiled a list of the top five fashion trends of 2009, in no particular order.

One spot on this list definitely goes to pantyhose (which, contrary to what some may believe, are very different than leggings).

Never before have women so eagerly donned pantyhose, sheer garments that are most commonly worn in nude colors with skirts and dresses.

In 2009, pantyhose in bright colors like pink, purple and blue could be seen paired with dresses and heels, and black hose with black outfits became an affordable way to look sophisticated.

No longer just for punk kids, studs and leather also made a mainstream comeback in 2009.

Thanks to an increase in popularity for brands like Rock & Republic, along with major fashion players like Karl Lagerfield embracing the trend for powerhouse labels like Chanel, leather and studs became a symbol for strength in fashion.

Pop singer Lady GaGa even mentioned the look in her last single of the decade, singing, "I want your leather studded kiss in the sand" in "Bad Romance."

Big trend number three was skinny jeans, which made appearances on both men and women throughout 2009. Retail chain American Eagle, known for having a wide selection of premium jeans at affordable prices, debuted its "Skinny" fit this season, making the trend easily available to the masses.

Boots are always trendy during the winter months, but this year the public really latched on to riding boots and motorcycle boots. Gone were the slouchy fits of 2008 and in were buckles, zippers and dark colors like mahogany and jet black.

The last major trend of 2009 was fringe, which we'll be seeing much more of in 2010.

While men have yet to embrace the look, women could be seen donning fringe boots, vests, bags and even headpieces.

So what's in store for 2010? Judging by this year's Spring runway looks, we're losing our tough edge in the coming months.

Slouchy, comfortable sweaters and floral prints in soft colors will dominate the warmer months, and scarves and sunglasses will prove to be easy ways to transform an ordinary outfit into the trendiest of ensembles.
