Can you juice cabbage

Yes, you can!

Juicing is a great way of including more fruit and vegetables in your diet, especially those we don't eat enough of.

For me cabbage is one such vegetable. Even though I really like it I admit it's not a vegetable I use a lot of in my everyday cooking. Not sure why. Perhaps because it is not as easy to prepare as carrot or cucumber are, for example.

So if like me you would like to include more cabbage in your diet the easiest way to do this is to make cabbage juice.

How to make cabbage juice taste great

  • Each juice recipe contains 2 vegetables (cabbage and one other) and 1 fruit. I find that this combination provides just the right amount of sweetness to enhance the flavour of the vegetables (raw cabbage juice is not very sweet and it pairs really well with naturally sweet ingredients).
  • Another easy, tried and tested way of making cabbage juice taste delicious is adding a little bit of citrus fruit to it. Lemons, limes and oranges all work well!

Cabbage juice benefits

We all know that cabbage is a super healthy vegetable.Cabbage as well as cabbage juice are packed full of important nutrients and vitamins, such as Vitamins C and K. Drinking cabbage juice may also have a beneficial effect on our digestion, heart health, cholesterol, blood pressure, the list goes on.

So whether coleslaw or sauerkraut, eating cabbage, both raw or fermented, as well as cooked, has lots of benefits. And if you are pressed for time you can always make a delicious juice!

*Note that drinking too much cabbage juice can have some negative side effects.

Equipment you will need

Cabbage, carrot and apple juice

This is a very inexpensive juice recipe using popular ingredients. Carrots and apples taste great together and the cabbage adds a little sharpness and tones down the sweetness of the other ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 300 g white cabbage
  • 2 medium carrots (unpeeled)
  • 2 medium apples (unpeeled)
  • Squeeze of lemon juice

Ingredients

  • 300 g cabbage
  • ½ cucumber, peeled
  • ¼ honey dew melon, peeled, deseeded
  • Squeeze of lemon juice

Cabbage, beetroot and orange juice

These 3 ingredients would make a great salad, but are equally delicious in a juice. This combination of ingredients also creates a vibrant, rich colour!

Ingredients

  • 300 g cabbage
  • 1 large beetroot, peeled
  • 2 oranges, peeled

Storing vegetable juice

Making your own juice is much cheaper than buying it in a juice bar or supermarket (and probably fresher, too). You can keep any unused fresh juice in a bottle or jar in the fridge for a couple of days.

Why not take a bottle of your homemade juice to work or pop it in your child's lunchbox!

Happy juicing!

Top tips

  • Whenever possible it is best to use unpeeled vegetables and fruits for juicing for maximum nutritional benefits.Exceptions include beets, which I prefer to peel in order to make sure no grit gets into my juice.I also peel citrus fruit as the skin is bitter.
  • Chop the fruit and veg roughly before juicing.
  • You can keep any unused fresh juice in a bottle or jar in the fridge for a couple of days. Shake before use.
