What is it about halloumi that makes it so damn delicious? Well, it's salty, versatile and it makes the most amazing squeaky noise when you cook it, and you just can't argue with that. There are so many easy and tasty ways of cooking halloumi, so let's take a look at a few of them, shall we?

What is halloumi?

First things first, shall we look into what halloumi actually is? Well, it’s a Cypriot semi-hard, unripened cheese made, which is from a mixture of goat's and sheep's milk, and sometimes also cow's milk.

How to cook halloumi

There are a number of different ways to cook halloumi...

How to fry halloumi

The best way to fry halloumi is to first slice it into 5mm–1cm thick slices. Place a frying pan over a medium heat, then add the slices of halloumi to the pan. Allow the halloumi to fry for around 2-3 minutes, then check to see if it’s golden. If so, flip the slices with tongs and fry the other side for 2-3 minutes. Season the halloumi with pepper (not salt as halloumi is naturally salty) and a squeeze of lemon juice, if that’s what you’re into.

Baked halloumi is another delicious way of cooking the Cypriot cheese. Pre-heat your oven 200°C (180ºC fan). Cut your halloumi into 5mm-1cm thick slices, then lay them in a single layer in an ovenproof dish. Drizzle with a little olive oil, then place in the oven for 10-15 minutes; turning halfway through.

BBQ halloumi

Grilling halloumi on a BBQ is the perfect meat-free option for your veggie friends. Again, cut your halloumi into 5mm-1cm slices and brush them with a little olive oil. Then cook them quickly on your BBQ. This will give your halloumi lovely bar marks, which always looks cool.
