Celebrating Older Americans Day

People in the Roseboro community walk around the gym of the Roseboro Senior Center as part of the Older Americans Day celebration. The event went from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday with karaoke in the gym, booths for people to check out and a cake walk in a room across the hallway. The organizer of the event, Sheila Armwood, said that this event was to not merely to celebrate older Americans, but to show them that they can still do things even as they get older.

Local juniors graduate from leadership program

CLINTON — Sixteen high school juniors from Sampson County Schools recently completed a year-long Junior Leadership program. The program helped students to develop leadership, communication and team-building skills and provided them with the channels to interact with students from other schools and community leaders.

One arrested, others sought in FD break-in; $100k in equipment stolen

A man is facing a slew of felony offenses in connection with a break-in to Piney Grove Fire Department, which reportedly needed to borrow equipment from other stations to remain operational. After arresting one suspect, investigators are currently working to recover the stolen property and identify others involved in the incident.

Recent ‘mayhem’ prompts multi-agency patrols, search for those responsible

Over the course of the past few weeks, several incidents have occurred in which residences were shot at, with some sustaining injuries as a result of the gunfire. Sampson County Sheriff’s authorities, while investigating the incidents, said they are stepping up patrols and attempting to secure warrants “for those responsible for such mayhem.”

Man shot in face during vehicle chase; felony assault, drug offenses leveled

A Sampson man is facing felony charges and a sizable bond after allegedly chasing after his estranged girlfriend and her acquaintances, firing shots into her vehicle and shooting another man in the face. Sampson County Sheriff’s authorities took the suspect and his brother into custody, leveling a bevy of felony drug and assault offenses in incident, which is still being investigated.

Raper named UMO First Lady Emerita

It was an evening of celebration Tuesday as University of Mount Olive staff, faculty and friends of the institution honored Rose M. Raper, First Lady of Mount Olive College (MOC), naming her First Lady Emerita, the first honor of its kind given to any UMO presidential spouse.

Honoring our fallen

The devoted members of American Legion Auxiliary Post 319 were out once again Tuesday fulfilling their tradition of planting flags in honor of fallen veterans.
