Using reusable bags is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce your environmental impact when you shop for groceries. Not only do reusable bags save resources and energy, but they also prevent plastic waste from ending up in landfills, oceans, and wildlife habitats. However, many shoppers still rely on single-use plastic bags, either out of habit, convenience, or lack of awareness. How can you encourage more people to switch to reusable bags in a grocery store? Here are some tips and strategies that can make a difference.

1 Offer incentives and rewards
One way to motivate shoppers to use reusable bags is to offer them incentives and rewards for doing so. For example, you can give them a discount on their purchase, a loyalty point, a coupon, or a free product for bringing their own bags. You can also create a competition or a raffle among customers who use reusable bags and reward them with prizes or vouchers. These incentives and rewards can appeal to shoppers' sense of saving money, earning benefits, or having fun.

What do I have to say about reusable bags? Honestly, the biggest selling point for me are the handles and the durability of the bags. This morning, one large reusable bag fit all of my groceries. The bag was full up, and it was heavy. The alternative would have been about four paper bags, not with handles. The baggers either fill those paper bags half full, or double bag, so as not to rip the bags. With paper bags, I would also have to lug the entire cart to my car, fill up my trunk with the bags, and take at least two trips from my car to my kitchen. Many stores offer discounts if you bring in your own bags. These discounts must be more of an incentive; 10 cents per bag isn't enough.

Pode-se disponibilizar a venda de sacolas reutilizáveis a preço acessível. Também seria interessante um programa de fidelidade, onde o cliente que retornasse x vezes com a sacola ecológica ganhasse algum prêmio.

2 Educate and inform
Another way to encourage shoppers to use reusable bags is to educate and inform them about the environmental and social benefits of doing so. For example, you can display signs, posters, or flyers that show how much plastic waste is generated by single-use bags, how long it takes to decompose, and how it affects wildlife and ecosystems. You can also share stories, testimonials, or facts that highlight how reusable bags can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve resources, and support local communities. These messages can appeal to shoppers' sense of responsibility, empathy, or curiosity.

A clear, compelling, and always-on customer communication plan, delivered across multiple channels is vital to change customer behaviour. Explaining the benefits of making a choice to switch to reusable bags will articulate the case for change. The call to arms. However, the retailer must also clearly communicate the mechanic for that change. What alternatives are available to customers, and what environmental benefit do those alternatives deliver? Informed customers are more likely to change their habits.

3 Provide convenience and accessibility
A third way to encourage shoppers to use reusable bags is to provide convenience and accessibility for them. For example, you can sell reusable bags at a low price, offer different sizes and designs, and place them near the entrance or the checkout. You can also provide storage options for customers who forget their bags, such as lockers, bins, or racks. You can also remind customers to bring their bags through email, text, or phone alerts, or by asking them at the point of sale. These measures can appeal to shoppers' sense of ease, comfort, or habit.

Switching the retailer bag proposition to a reusable range presents a great opportunity to better define the range offered to customers. What is the specific purpose of each bag, and which shopper mission is it best suited to? How will customers use the bags?Retailers may consider the need for a loose produce bag, a freezer bag, a heavy-duty option, a low-cost value option for 'forgetters', as well as general purpose choice that is likely to see the majority of sales volume. The structural design and functionality of each bag in the range should be tailored to its purpose. The new bag range should merchandised in an area that can be easily accessed, usually close to checkouts with supporting POS.

4 Set an example and influence
A fourth way to encourage shoppers to use reusable bags is to set an example and influence them. For example, you can use reusable bags yourself when you shop for groceries, and show them to your friends, family, or colleagues. You can also promote reusable bags on your social media, website, or blog, and share your tips, experiences, or recommendations. You can also join or support campaigns, initiatives, or organizations that advocate for reusable bags and raise awareness among the public. These actions can appeal to shoppers' sense of belonging, trust, or inspiration.

The examples listed in the article are extremely useful, from a customer perspective hoping to influence other customers. However, retailers can and should tell the positive story of their customers making the switch to reusable. In-store magazines, customer-facing websites, and communication can be engaging channels for positive communication,Customers who see others making the switch will be more likely to adjust their own behaviours.

5 Implement policies and regulations
A fifth way to encourage shoppers to use reusable bags is to implement policies and regulations that discourage or limit the use of single-use plastic bags. For example, you can charge a fee for each plastic bag, ban them altogether, or require them to be biodegradable or compostable. You can also lobby or petition your local government, business association, or environmental group to adopt or enforce such policies and regulations. These interventions can appeal to shoppers' sense of compliance, justice, or change.

6 Monitor and evaluate
A sixth way to encourage shoppers to use reusable bags is to monitor and evaluate the impact of your efforts and strategies. For example, you can track and measure how many reusable bags are sold, used, or returned, how much plastic waste is reduced, or how much money is saved or donated. You can also solicit and analyze feedback, suggestions, or complaints from customers, staff, or partners. You can also report and celebrate your achievements, challenges, or learnings. These steps can help you improve your practices, identify gaps, or recognize successes.

Ocado give you money back when you return them upon the next delivery or otherwise. However they are so thin it is unlikely you can use them for anything else 😆

It is likely that a retailer would need to externally report their single-use plastic carrier bag sales, if not already banned. A retailer should consider reporting successful customer switching within their broader ESG reporting, customer communication messaging, and in-store POS. Having launched their refreshed range, a retailer should seek regular feedback from customers on design, performance, and value. Regular refreshes of the range, value proposition, and potentially limited edition bags will ensure the range delivers for customers and promotes longer-term sustainable choices.
