Your ultimate guide to themed parties in college (2024)

In all honesty, being a college student is NOT easy. College students are just trying to make the best of their days if/when they can. Therefore, college kids will pounce at an opportunity to blow off some pent-up steam from the week. Whispers will be passed throughout the grapevine, about upcoming shenanigans.

Being a naïve freshman last year, concepts of “themed parties” were practically foreign to me. I considered “dressing up” as a pair of cleanjeans and a white top…Boy, was I wrong. So I have tried to condense a simple guide of how to dress for themes.

You must keep in mind that you are a BROKE college kid and on a strict (lol) budget.

When it comes to dressing up, don’t spend a ton of your coins on something that you will only wear once. You must keep in mind that everything that you wear has the possibility of being completely ruined or even stolen.

Never underestimate a good fracket (RIP)

FRACKETS are major keys – invest in a $8.00 jacket from Goodwill because it might just save you from hypothermia. Do not wear your new floor length Canada Goose jacket because it will probably get stolen. It’ll reek of spilled drinks and totally kill your aesthetic, but it’ll also be your life saver.

Rumble in the jungle, but stay away from being down for the count.Your ultimate guide to themed parties in college (3)

When it comes to anything that is “jungle themed” you can always dress up as an animal. ANIMALS are another major key. Reuse a friends’ Halloween ears and dress monochromatically and boom, you can dig anything.Your ultimate guide to themed parties in college (4)

Camo is also never a bad idea, have at least one thing in your wardrobe that has camo on it and you would be set.

Cowboys and Aliens

Now a “space theme” isn’t that difficult. Hunt in your closet for anything that is black, blue, gray, white, purple or metallic. Or you can throw your hair into two Miley buns and use an old eyeliner to draw some festival doodles. If you only have black, wear it and be a “black hole.”When it comes to a classic cowgirl, always go with a flannel and jeans/jean shorts.

ABC

Your ultimate guide to themed parties in college (6)ABC, it’s easy as 1. 2. 3. or find, measure, cut. ABC parties are genuinely one of my favorite themes. You literally have to find a piece of trash that has a cute design and is in decent condition. Whether that trash is an old twister board, or an old Victoria’s secret bag put it on your body and measure to make it fit. Then cut.

Countries/sports

Your ultimate guide to themed parties in college (7)When it comes to dressing up as a certain country, always dress up as AMERICA. I can guarantee it is the easiest. Revamp what you wore for the 4th of July and call it quits. If the theme entails having to dress up as some kind of sport (ex: Olympics, WorldCup) once again rep red, white and blue.

Rocker/biker gang

Your ultimate guide to themed parties in college (8)WEAR BLACK. You can literally never go wrong with black. Use a little more eyeliner, and a strong red lip and honestly you’d be set. I want YOU to ride on and rock.

TOGA

Greek physique is all about pillow cases. That’s what I’m talking about and that’s what I like. Follow my 1, 2, 3’s and this theme should be e-z. 1.Find an old pillow case. 2. Measureit to your liking and styling 3.Cut that bad boy up.

Celebrities with no integrities

If you have to dress up as a celebrity put together a ridiculous outfit and purchase a colorful wig. You could be anyone with a wig, Kylie Jenner, Nicki Minaj, Britney Spears circa 2009.

Hippies

We’ve all got that one friend that should have been born in the 60’s. Whether they are protesting equal rights in their Birkenstocks or making granola, their closet is going to be a goldmine. Or if you don’t have a super chill homie, just tie-dye an old tee.

Risky Business is (never) overdone.

When it comes to 80’s themes, everyone has done the neon yoga pants, high ponytails, and scrunchies. Throw a curveball and TBT to the better days of Tom Cruise. Wear a long white button-down, white socks and shorts. No one would be bugg’nbout a little TBT.

Keep it cheap, and keep it classy (or not). But most of all keep in mind, there’s a good chance your clothes will get ruined/not even make it home with you so just have fun with it.
